Cyber Attacks | Extorted More Than $500 Million With Ransomware In The US
US companies paid more than half a billion dollars in the first half of 2021 after attacks with blackmail Trojans. The attacks are becoming more frequent.
In the United States, ransom payments following ransomware attacks totaled $ 590 million in the first half of 2021. That’s 42 percent more than the number of suspicious payments reported for all of 2020, according to a report by the U.S. Treasury Department.
If the trend continues, there could be “higher ransomware-related transaction value” throughout 2021 than the past decade combined. The report is based on reports of suspicious financial transactions, which are usually made via cryptocurrencies.
Ransomware — also known as blackmail trojans — is software that is infiltrated into the system and blocks computers and other systems. The operators are then blackmailed so that the systems can be reactivated. The term contains the English word for ransom (“ransom”).
There have been a number of spectacular ransomware attacks in the United States in the past few months. Among other things, they met the operator of the largest pipeline in the USA. The administration of US President Joe Biden wants to take decisive action against such attacks and held a virtual summit with more than 30 states on the subject this week.
